From the end of October 2023 Iceland experienced an intense wave of seismic activity - In just a few weeks, more than 20 000 earthquakes, and on some days up to 800 tremors. The situation escalated as the volcano erupted Fagradalsfjall, which has forced the evacuation of thousands of residents, particularly in the south-western region.
In response Global Empowerment Mission Europe organised a mission to Iceland, to support families displaced by volcanic hazards and to help communities prepare for future eruptions. The mission focused on both immediate assistance, as well as on preparing for further possible escalations.
Our team distributed Family First Aid Kits and other essentials to evacuees in key locations, including: Reykjavík, Keflavík and Selfoss - where support included both people and their pets (by providing pet food); and in localities Garður, Hafnarfjörður, Mosfellsbær, Kerhraun, Reykholt, Flúðir, Suðurland and Vogar - where the distribution of relief kits has helped to meet immediate needs during periods of isolation and displacement.
In several cities, items for animals were also included in the aid parcels, emphasising the importance of protecting both the pets as well as farm animals during natural disasters.
Our activities were carried out in cooperation with local coordinators, which has enabled rapid and flexible support tailored to the situation of each community.
