Following the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay in Myanmar on 28 March 2025, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) Europe immediately launched a humanitarian response in collaboration with local partners.
The catastrophe caused massive damage, infrastructure collapse and mass displacement. The tremors were also felt in northern Thailand.
Despite the ongoing internal conflict and major logistical barriers, humanitarian aid was successfully organised and delivered across the border - a key achievement made possible by working closely with proven local partners. We distributed food, drinking water and GEM emergency kits in the Mandalay region, also reaching remote villages in Tadau district, including Shan Zay, Mont Ti Suu, Kine Barr and Kwan The Dann.

From the first days after the earthquake, our GEM Europe team provided support to displaced people in the Thai border town of Mae Sot. Many families from Myanmar are living in makeshift conditions, in temporary encampments without access to basic infrastructure. We provided emergency aid there, including food and basic essentials for the refugee families.
The mission was accomplished by working closely with Burmese church communities, local volunteers and partners on both sides of the border. Aid was transported through the Mae Sai border crossing - despite significant logistical challenges.
