In July 2023 Greece has experienced one of the most devastating fire seasons in recent years.More than 80 forest fires, which were exacerbated by prolonged heat, drought and strong winds. The disaster led to the deaths of at least 28 people, numerous injuries and the evacuation of more than 19 000 Rhodes Islanders. Entire communities, farms and thousands of animals were affected by the destruction.

GEM Europe responded immediately, directing aid to several of the most affected regions in Greece. The mission focused on providing vital assistance to people and animals, as well as strengthening the capacity of local emergency services.

W Kiotari in Rhodes GEM Europe has provided family aid kits, bales of clover for horses and dry food for dogs and cats. This animal support element of the mission was made possible through collaboration with the organisation Flew The Coop, whose financial assistance has made it possible to support local shelters and displaced animals.

W Nea Anchialos our team distributed emergency aid to families affected by the fires.
W Lavrio provided equipment to the local volunteer fire brigade, supporting its community protection activities.

Throughout the mission, we worked closely with local partners and authorities to ensure that aid reached the most affected areas quickly and efficiently. Our support aimed not only to meet immediate needs, but also to To contribute to the recovery and resilience of communities in the face of increasing environmental threats.

This mission underlines GEM Europe's ongoing commitment to responding quickly, in a coordinated and compassionate manner to crises across Europe.
