Relocation Programme

W pierwszych dniach po wybuchu wojny w Ukrainie tysiące osób uciekało przed zagrożeniem, trafiając do przepełnionych dworców, hal i punktów recepcyjnych w Polsce. Its aim was to move tens of thousands of people quickly and safely to countries that could provide them with accommodation, care and a chance for a new start.

Program realizowany był od marca do lata 2022 roku, obejmując swoim zasięgiem dziesiątki tysięcy osób.

Scale of assistance

  • 38,744 people from Ukraine have found safe refuge in more than 40 countries around the world thanks to the programme's support.
  • 13,624 people have been provided with short-term accommodation in Poland and Europe through a partnership with Airbnb.org.
  • Together, we relocated nearly 40,000 people to 48 countries, making the project one of the largest of its kind in Europe just after the outbreak of war.

How we acted

Our team focused on providing immediate support to refugees arriving in and around Warsaw.

  • At railway stations (Western, Central, Eastern) and in large reception halls (Torwar, Global EXPO, Ptak EXPO), GEM and PBB volunteers identified the needs of people who had nowhere else to go.
  • We have organised transport to countries in Europe and beyond - financing air, rail and bus tickets, and working with travel companies including Why Not Travel.
  • For those without a plan to travel further, we provided temporary accommodation, often in collaboration with Airbnb.org, so that they could look forward to their next steps in peace.
  • By employing 40 Ukrainian-speaking female leaders, the programme was able to operate effectively, fully respecting the needs of families and understanding language barriers.
  • Upon arrival in the destination country, we kept in touch with the families, helping them to find their way in the new reality.

The programme could not have taken place without the cooperation of many partners:

  • Jolanta Kwasniewska's 'Communication without Barriers' Foundation - was responsible for local coordination of activities and field work.
  • Why Not Travel - provided international transport services.
  • Airbnb.org - has enabled short-term accommodation for thousands of families.

The relocation programme played an important role in the first months of the crisis. Thanks to the cooperation with Jolanta Kwasniewska's 'Communication without Barriers' Foundation:

  • Thousands of families were able to leave crowded reception points and quickly find themselves in a safe environment,
  • refugees were placed in countries and communities prepared to receive them on a long-term basis, increasing their chances of stabilisation and integration,
  • The PBB team, including 40 Ukrainian-speaking female leaders, provided daily support at the railway stations and reception halls in Warsaw, facilitating communication and fostering a sense of security,
  • The experience of this programme has become a model for international and local cooperation, demonstrating the impact of combining global resources with local commitment.
